Interiors of the Club of Erzsébetváros

Béla Lajta was one of founders of the bourgeois-middle class club called ’Club of Erzsébetváros’ ('Erzsébetvárosi Kaszinó'), which he also served as arts advisor. His brother, Lipót was one of the leading figures of the Casino, while the association’s cashier was Marcell Káldor, who later became Lajta’s father-in-law. The two gaming rooms, the restaurant and the lounge that comprised the premises of the Casino were converted from apartments at 28 Rákóczi Street according to Lajta’s plans.Similarly to the Hercegprímás Street gateway of ’Sándor Schmidl and Son’s Shop of Exotic Goods’ designed at the same time, the interior suggests a severe taste with no historical references and follows the contemporary geometric style of Viennese Secession.
